Report from December 7, 2016 Church Conference
Rev. James Williams, our District Superintendent, was present to lead our church Conference on Wednesday Night. He guided us through as we elected those who will lead us in the coming year and also as salary recommendations were approved for those clergy who are appointed to St. Luke, and we heard excellent reports from several of our Directors/Staff. It is always so good to be reminded of all of the ministries that St. Luke is a part of in our church, and community, and around the world. What a great church you are!
After a wonderful Advent devotion by Rev. Williams, we moved into a great discussion about the proposal coming from the staff and Servant Leadership Team to adjust the worship times. After several had a chance to share their viewpoint, the consensus of the group was that we are not ready to make these changes at this time. Many touched on issues that need to be adequately resolved before making any changes. The ones that were expressed the most were the shortening of the 1st and 3rd services to 50 minutes and the shorter transition times between services. The feeling was that this would detract from the times of fellowship and interaction that takes place between services and that it would place a great deal of stress on the Choir, Worship Band, and Liturgists to be in place and ready to go in a timely manner, but there were other concerns raised as well. So essentially the Conference sent the proposal back to Staff/Directors and the SLT for further consideration.
For now, our worship times will remain 8:30, 9:45 and 11:00, and the start times for Sunday School and God’s Backyard will not change either. We are thankful for all of those who came to the Church Conference and shared what was on their heart. The Staff and Directors will continue to consider a worship schedule that makes vital worship accessible to the largest number of persons possible with the least amount of turmoil to the other ministries that surround and interact with our worship services. I encourage you to offer your input and suggestions to one of the Staff/Directors.The conversation will resume after the first of the year.
For now, let us concentrate on worshiping our God, who came to us as a baby in a manger. This Sunday is our Music Sunday. The Chancel Choir and Children’s Choir will lead us at 8:30, 9:45 and 11:00. December 18 will be our traditional Service of Lessons and Carols in the morning services. Christmas Eve services will be at 5:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. and on Christmas morning we will have one service at 10:00 a.m. What a special time to worship our Lord. Come and Worship. Come Lord Jesus.
