We will Miss “Miss Mary”
August 20th will be Mary McKnight’s last Sunday to serve our precious little ones in the nursery. Mary has been a faithful, loving presence at St. Luke for 21 years. There will be a large poster for folks to sign located near the children’s information table each Sunday this month. Stop by and write her a note of thanks for loving our children so very well. Miss Mary has been a tremendous blessing to St. Luke!

Church-Wide Study Announced!
The Grow and Equip Team is happy to announce that St. Luke’s annual church-wide study will be over the new release by Jorge Acevedo and Wes Olds: A Grace-Full Life. The authors offer us an excellent Wesleyan understanding of the way God works in the world in simple words for all people. We will kick off on October 1st with an opening sermon and worship service. The following Sunday, October 8th, will start the chapter 1 Sunday School discussions that will run for 4 weeks. There is an optional closing ‘epilogue’ session included. We are excited about how this book will help us all recognize God’s grace working in our past and give us a picture of how God might work in our lives for the future. God’s all-reaching, soul saving, character shaping, never-ending love is constantly pursuing us! Let’s be open to receiving it and see where God might lead us!
Christmas Shoeboxes • This year we will be preparing and sending Christmas shoeboxes to the school children of our partner village in Nicaragua. This will be done through the United Methodist Committee On Relief. For the boxes to be distributed in time for Christmas, our annual shoe box drive has already begun and it will run through August. In the Connection Center, there is a display with the boxes and an instruction sheet for preparing each box. Pick some up and bring them back on Sunday, August 27 to be dedicated and prepared to take to the UMCOR depot to be shipped. Please include $5 with each box to pay the shipping costs. We have a list of nearly 300 children that we would like to send boxes to this Christmas.
Giving in Summer • It happens every year. When we get to summertime in the church both giving and attendance take a plunge as people head out on vacation and to family reunions and weekends at the lake. But the ministry of the church continues on unabated. So, by the time we reach August, the cash flow is at a low point. And though our giving for the year is up from last year, we have absorbed two additional mortgage payments into the Mission and Vision Fund (about a $48,000 increase over last year). So we need help so that we can continue to meet all of our obligations. If you have fallen behind in your regular giving this summer, please make every effort to catch up soon. And if you are able to put a little extra in the offering plate in the next few weeks, that would be a great blessing. If we all pitch, in we can help the church continue without disruption of any of the wonderful ministries for which St. Luke is known. And thanks, as always, for being such Generous People In Action. In Christ, Pastor Mark
Kids’ Cafe Needs You! • Kids’ Café builds relationships with children so they experience God’s love and grow mentally, physically, socially and spiritually. We will reopen this Tuesday afterschool outreach on September 19 and invite you to work one or more Tuesdays a month. Please contact Sue Lord, 859-797-1586, firstname.lastname@example.org, for specific options for serving.
Youth Parents Meeting • Our youth programming will be going through some exciting changes this school year! We would love to have parents of any Middle School and High School students come to a lunch on August 20 after the 11:00 service in room 128 to hear all about what we will be doing. If your youth has not been involved in the past, this would be a great way to start fresh!
Blue Barrel Sunday • Let’s fill the God’s Pantry Blue Barrels with food donations. Please take home a Blue Barrel Bag and bring it back next week filled with all kinds of canned meat and non-meat protein items. Canned meat includes tuna, chicken, beef stew, Vienna sausages, Spam, and chili as well as the canned pasta which includes meat. The non-meat protein can include peanut butter, kidney beans, pinto beans, cannellini beans, black beans, and great northern beans.
Prayer Shawl Ministry
Compassion and the love of knitting/crocheting have been combined into a prayerful ministry and spiritual practice which reaches out to those in need of comfort and solace, as well as in celebration and joy. Many blessings are prayed into the shawls. The Prayer Shawl Ministry of St. Luke Methodist Church meets every Tuesday morning in Room 124 from 10:00-12:00. If you knit/crochet, or would like to learn, please join us in the making and giving of the Prayer Shawls.
Wednesday.comm Fall Semester • Our opening event this year consists of a dinner and opening worship and sharing service led by the Grow and Equip Leadership Team. The meal begins at 5:15 and the Opening Worship Service will start at 6:00 p.m. and run until 7:00 p.m. The service will consist of a time of worship, of witnessing to what God is doing and of commissioning the facilitators for this semester of Wednesday.comm. Wednesday evenings are a great way to get connected at St. Luke. Each Wednesday evening starts with a time of fellowship over dinner. Following the meal there are classes and activities for children, youth, and adults.
Wednesday.comm Classes and Activities start August 23rd! Once again this year the meals will be hosted by different groups and classes to raise awareness and support for various ministries in our community. Meals are $5 per plate ($15 max per family, sharing allowed if you wish) and will be served from 5:15 -6:30 p.m. Our new Wednesday.comm meal organizer is Marty Sell. If you are interested in serving during the meals, let Marty know, and she will be glad to find a place for you to serve.
